"THE BEGGAR'S LAKE Sleeping Dogs THE debut four-track EP from The Beggar's Lake is a magical mix of rock, country, folk and Americana. Sometimes REM, sometimes The Levellers or The Waterboys, it gurns and growls through the rotten floorboards of Scotland's underbelly. The five-piece band from Lanarkshire is led by brothers Dominic and Owen O'Rourke. Lanarkshire's musical love affair with west-coast America is well known and The Beggar's Lake goes more for the stark grittiness of that area's mountains than the harmonies of its surf. Opening track Suzie is a foot-stomping anthem about a battered woman. Seven Sisters continues the country rock of Suzie, Harbour Song adds a beautiful mandolin and Southern Man is a red-neck, snake-eyed stomp.
